Mexico: Journalist Shot Dead at Her Home in Tabasco State

According to reports from local news sources on Wednesday, 12 June, a newspaper reporter has been gunned down and killed in Tabasco state. The incident occurred on Tuesday, 11 June, when two armed men on a motorbike shot the journalist, Norma Sarabia, several times outside her home. Ms Sarabia was a correspondent for the newspaper Tabasco Today for 15 years. Mexico is one of the most dangerous countries in the world for reporters; this incident comes as more than 100 have been murdered since 2000 amid a wave of violence linked to drug trafficking and political corruption. Ms.Sarabia is the sixth journalist slain this year in Mexico.

Indonesia: Authorities Warn of More Flash Floods and Landslides following Days of Flooding in Central and Southeast Sulawesi

International and national news outlets have reported on Thursday, 13 June, that authorities have warned of more flash floods and landslides after days of flooding in Central and Southeast Sulawesi. More than 5,000 people were forced to evacuate the above regions following floods caused by heavy rain, with more forecast to fall between now and Saturday, 15 June. Several houses have been damaged as a result of the flooding, with many of the local paddy and corn fields also having been inundated. The island is home to many of the country’s nickel ore processing plants, with the bridge connecting the capital of Morowali regency to the industrial park being washed away.

Sweden: Police Shoot Man following Reports of Threatening Behaviour at Malmo’s Central Station

According to international media reports on Monday, 10 June, police have shot a man at Malmo’s Central Station after they were deployed to the scene at 1010hrs (0810 UTC) following reports that he had been exhibiting threatening behaviour towards travellers. The station was evacuated following the incident and the injured suspect is receiving medical treatment. Police bomb squads were also deployed to the station and may have detonated a suspicious package. Authorities have not specified whether they believe the incident was related to terrorism, however security at a number of public places has been increased as a result. Travel disruption in the vicinity of the station has been reported.

China: Thousands Displaced, Fatalities Reported following Flooding in Central and Southern Regions; Further Rains Forecast

According to media reports on Tuesday, 11 June, thousands of people have been left stranded and at least five killed after torrential rain caused localised flooding throughout central and southern regions. Hundreds of homes were destroyed in Jiangxi, whilst 20,000 households in Guangxi suffered power cuts. Roads and bridges were also damaged. According to the China Meteorological Administration, rainfall in Jiangxi reached as much as 688mm (27 in), whilst Hunan experienced record amounts for June. Further storms have been forecast for Guangdong, Fujian, Jiangxi, Yunnan and Sichuan until Thursday, 13 June.
